Santosh Sivan will be the first Indian to receive the Cannes Film Festival’s Pierre Angénieux tribute award on May 24. As the big day approaches, prominent figures in Indian cinema are celebrating the accomplished cinematographer for his special achievement.
Shah Rukh Khan, who collaborates with Santosh on Dil Se and Asoka, praised his work. He said, “Santa’s work as a DoP is extremely unique and original, deeply rooted in his experiences and learnings.”
Aamir Khan, who worked with Santosh Sivan on the 1989 film Raakh, said, “His understanding of film extends beyond that of a DoP; he views the film from the perspective of other filmmakers as well.”
Director Mani Ratnam, a longtime collaborator, remarked, “With him, there’s no situation that is very difficult to light. He adapts to everything around him, delivering results that bear his unique stamp.”
Vidya Balan, who had a cameo in Santosh’s Urumi, commented, “I didn’t have to worry about how I looked because every frame he shoots is like a painting.”
Mohanlal, who worked with Santosh Sivan on films such as Yoddha and Iruvar, added, “Through his work, he has always mesmerized audiences. His dedication to his craft and pursuit of excellence are well-known.”
Additionally, a masterclass with the cinematographer is schedule for May 23 at the festival.

The Cannes Film Festival began honouring cinematographers with the Pierre Angénieux Tribute Award in 2013. It named after the pioneer of modern zoom lenses. With this recognition, Santosh Sivan joins the ranks of esteemed past recipients like Edward Lachman, Agnès Godard, Barry Ackroyd, and Roger Deakins.
