OpenAI’s ‘Sky’ chatbot voice created controversy after it was found to resemble the voice of Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson. Researchers now claim it also has similarities with Anne Hathaway and Keri Russell.

According to NPR, an artificial intelligence lab analysis conducted by researchers at Arizona State University found that the ‘Sky’ personal assistant bears a striking resemblance to Johansson’s voice.

The university’s speech lab’s forensic voice experts compared the voice of Scarlett Johansson and speech patterns to Sky upon the publication’s request. Using AI models developed to assess voice similarity, researchers analyzed audio from various demos at OpenAI’s event and compared them to the voices of approximately 600 actresses.

The findings revealed that Johansson’s voice bears a greater resemblance to Sky than 98% of the other actresses. Arizona State University computer scientist Visar Berisha stated that the lab study shows the voices of Sky and Johansson have undeniable commonalities.

“Our analysis shows that the two voices are similar but likely not identical,” added Berisha, who led the voice analysis in the school’s College of Health Solutions and the College of Engineering.

The researchers analyzed the voices for likely “vocal tracts,” or what size throat, mouth, and nasal passages would produce a particular sounding voice. They found Sky and Scarlett Johansson had identical tract lengths. The Sky voice has a slightly higher pitch than Johansson’s, and Johansson’s is slightly more breathy than Sky’s, the team said.

The researchers also claim to find that ‘Sky’ is reminiscent of other Hollywood stars, including Anne Hathaway and Keri Russell. “The analysis of Sky often rated Hathaway and Russell as being even more similar to the AI than Johansson,” the report said.
