Anasuya Sengupta, originally from Kolkata, debuted her neo-noir film ‘The Shameless’ at the Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard category.
An unusual aspect of this movie is that a Bulgarian director who doesn’t speak Hindi directed this Hindi film. According to Anasuya Sengupta, one of the main actors in Konstantin Bojanov’s film “The Shameless.”
The film premiered at the 77th Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard category, alongside other films such as “Santosh” directed by British Indian Sandhya Suri and starring Shahana Goswami.
Sengupta made history by being the first Indian actor to win the Best Performance award in Cannes’s Un Certain Regard category.
“The Shameless” features a talented cast including Mita Vashisht, Auroshika Dey, Tanmay Dhanania, and Rohit Kokate.
The film follows the story of Anasuya Sengupta and Omara Shetty as two accidental lovers, Devika and Renuka, both trapped in the world of sex work.
They built the set from scratch in Nepal due to high production costs in India. They portray Renuka as feisty and unyielding, while they depict Devika as timid, vulnerable, and seeking change.
The characters’ experiences shed light on the historical context of Devadasis and the culture of prostitution, highlighting the power dynamics within the profession.
